River-Lab Program

The award winning River-Lab environmental education program is the core product of Mill River Wetland Committee, Inc. and has supplemented Fairfield’s science education curriculum for over 50 years.  After a few early years, the River-Lab program became an opportunity for all students in grades 2-7 to have a hands on learning experience, using scientific principles like research and fieldwork, to study the river basin system structure of the Earth. Using our own Mill River and Rooster River systems, River-Lab allows students to apply what they learn in the classroom and connect that to a personal real-life experience in the field.  This interactive education reaches over 3,300 students each year.

Can all students, in all communities participate in River-Lab? Yes!  Because river basin systems cover the entire Earth, the River-Lab program can be applicable in any geographic location, with adaptations we can provide.  Each grade level module is aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards, but can also be modified for age appropriateness.

Get outside!  To offer one or more of the River-Lab modules to your students, please contact office@mrwc-fairfield.org to schedule and get additional information.

Fees:  Each module of the River-Lab program can be offered separately or as part of the full curriculum.  The cost of a single class study trip/classroom based lab begins at $250 for a 90-minute program and includes an MRWC trip leader, all student and lab materials and extension activities.
