River-Lab Grade 5
Groundwater
For our Groundwater Systems Unit, fifth graders meet at the Mill River to investigate how the groundwater system and the water cycle work. Students compare and contrast the surface and ground features of two different watershed models, one natural and one developed. Everyone then has fun adding features to both models including everything from trees and leaves to cars and houses. After making predictions, students make it rain on both models! They then observe and measure the amounts of water that run off, collect on surface features and infiltrate our groundwater system.
Small student groups, led by staff and volunteers, explore the trail to further reinforce concepts, while enjoying a hands-on, positive environmental experience at four trail points. Throughout the trip, students are encouraged to collaborate and wonder about the natural setting around them!
