Interested in the health of your local watershed? Want to find a great outdoor family activity?
Join our growing group of citizen scientists, the Water Warriors, to perform critical water tests. We will provide you with the equipment and training to test the water, document the results and track the health of the water body over time. Once you are trained, you can sign up to test at whichever location works for you and at a convenient time during the month. To join the program, contact Lynn Shavinsky at engage@mrwc-fairfield.org.
Paul Piorek: A True Water Warrior
On Sunday, June 7, 2026 over 25 people attended the 60th St. Thomas Aquinas School's Fifth-Grade Water Warriors program on Sunday morning along the Mill River on Brookside Drive. For the past six years, Paul Piorek's students and parents have volunteered to obtain water samples and take six water quality tests from this same location. In celebration of his retirement, one student from each of Paul's last six fifth-grade classes (2021-2026) and their parents, along with current students, attended this final outing. The weather was fantastic, the water healthy, and the students were filled with enthusiasm as they were guided by their teacher to be faithful stewards of the Mill River. Congratulations Paul and thank you for being a true water warrior!

How's My Waterway?
Check out the EPA website that provides general reference about the health of local waterways. Water quality is monitored for physical, chemical and biological factors as they relate to swimming, aquatic life, safety of eating the fish and drinking the water. The monitoring results are assessed against state water quality standards approved by EPA.
EarthEcho Ambassador Program
The Water Warriors Program was created by Earth Echo Ambassador Claire Cohenuram. EarthEcho International is a nonprofit organization founded on the belief that youth have the power to change our planet. Established by siblings Philippe and Alexandra Cousteau in honor of their father Philippe Cousteau Sr., and grandfather Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the mission is to inspire young people worldwide to act now for a sustainable future.
