Bridgeport Watershed-Lab

The Bridgeport Watershed-Lab (BWL) concept grew directly from our years of experience successfully delivering our established curriculum in Fairfield. In MRWC’s experience, when children complete our
programs, they then carry forth knowledge and determination to their families and the community at large. By educating and inspiring youth to be aware and involved with their local environment and waterways, they begin to notice and subsequently take action, to solve problems such as runoff and pollution, the need for more open space and permeable surfaces and the importance of maintaining healthy water quality for their community and all of the habitats that the Long Island Sound and its watersheds support.

The goal of BWL is that this knowledge will be the basis for a renewed push for environmentally sound and just policies and practices specifically in the East Side neighborhood in Bridgeport, CT near Yellow Mill Channel. We chose to focus on this location because of its proximity to some of the most significant environmental and water quality problems near Long Island Sound. These include a lack of access to environmental educational resources.

Funding from the Restore America's Estuaries Long Island Sound Community Impact Fund (LISCIF) has enabled us to expand our programming in Bridgeport, which began last year with a partnership between Barnum School Fifth graders and their peers at St. Thomas Aquinas School in Fairfield. In the 2025-27 school years, MRWC will run 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 7th grade units as well as community engagement activities in cooperation with local organizations in Barnum School.
